Halloween Tips for Dogs
- Pick a comfortable costume. It should not cover the eyes, ears or mouth, and the dog should be able to walk, sit and pant normally. Try it on at home first, and skip it if the dog keeps trying to take it off.
- No chocolate or candy. Chocolate, xylitol (sugar-free gum and candy), raisins and candy wrappers are dangerous for dogs. Bring the dog’s own treats. If a dog eats chocolate, call a vet right away.
- Keep visits short. Costumes, crowds and noise are a lot for a dog. An hour or two is plenty, especially for puppies.
- Use a regular leash and keep it short in crowds.
- Mind the heat. Costumes trap heat, so take them off between photos and bring water.
- Check the vaccine card before going to crowded events. Ask a vet if shots are due.
